West Java Origin Trip 2024
In late October and early November, Jason (Opal BNE) and Hengky (Opal SYD) traveled to West Java to visit several coffee farms, with the goal of developing a sustainable and long-term buying plan.
Established in 2005, Wahana Estate is one of the largest private coffee estates in Indonesia that spans across almost 500ha of land in Sidikalang, Toba Region, North Sumatra with a coffee processing area of 10ha. After decades of trading Indonesian coffee, the need was found to produce and supply coffee for the specialty and high grade specialty market.
Through years of research and planning, land was finally acquired to start the Wahana Estate Project in 2005.
The estate has a Corporate Social Responsibility Program that provides farmers a support center, workers housing, workers safety and training program, free healthcare and free education. Located on the west of volcanic Lake Toba combined with high altitude on the equator belt, Sidikalang produces one of the most remarkable Sumatran coffees in the world.
To produce and deliver specialty and high grade specialty coffee, to deliver clear traceability coffee supply chains to the customers, and to practice and emphasize on sustainable agriculture.
Wahana coffee estate has around 30ha dedicated. The local seedling varieties that are currently growing are Long Berry from Aceh, Toraja from Sulawesi, Andong Sari from Jember Java, Rasuna from Sumatera, and S795 from Jember Java.
Wahana Estate also grows international seedling varieties such as Villa Sachi from Costa Rica, Cattura from Costa Rica, Cattuai from Costa Rica, and Colombia Typica from Colombia. By building a washing station inside Wahana Estate compound, it allows for higher quality and consistency throughout.
Wahana Estate has established a farmer support center to educate and help farmers. This means no children working on the farms or forced labor. Farmers will have access to housing, portable water and sanitary facilities, access to free health care services for workers, access to free housing and electricity on the farm, access to education for farmers’ children, and access to workers safety and training on the farm.
Wahana Estate is Opal Coffee’s sister company with an ongoing relationship where Opal buys from Wahana Estate consistently every year. Every year during harvest, origin visits happen and members of Opal Coffee attend to maintain the strong ties and relationships we have built there.
By recognizing the demand for high quality specialty Indonesia beans, we aim to bring Indonesian coffee to the New Zealand, Australian and the US market.

We recently had some Mountain Water Process Decaf land in New Zealand and we thought this would be a great opportunity to provide some information on the two types of Decaf that we currently have in our warehouses.
